Molly

I tried not to stare at James Daly, even though everyone else was. I tried not to cause a distraction or draw attention to myself, even though everyone else was. The night of Declan and Ciara’s rehearsal dinner had arrived, and I felt more drained than ever. As I stood in the corner of the club with Flynn’s arm around me, I focused on my champagne. On not giggling when the bubbles popped against my nose. I cleared my throat and swallowed back sounds, trying desperately to seem invisible.

Because the tension in the V.I.P. lounge was rife with vigorous anger.

I wanted to tell Flynn how I felt about us and the arranged marriage. But I also didn’t want to distract from Ciara’s big night. I knew how important this was to her. Even though I didn’t consider myself close with anyone in the family, I saw how much this meant to her. From the hug she gave me when we first walked in, to the way she pulled me aside and chattered on about how excited she was for tomorrow, I knew better than to open my mouth.

I knew better than to try and bring up anything else.

No one swallowed down their disdain for her father, though. I wasn’t clued in on all the details, but I knew the jist of it from Flynn: her father handed her off to pay a debt he owed to the family. Which was disgusting enough. My father would’ve never dreamt of such a move. Sure, we weren’t as well off as some of the other families. But he never would’ve exchanged one of us just to have a debt dropped. My father was a man of business. A man of transactions. He understood the value of a dollar and what it looked like when a man could pay his bills versus, well, what James Daly did.

I just hoped nothing bad happened tonight.

“Flynn?” I asked softly.

“Hmm?”

“Why was Mr. Daly invited again if it’s just going to cause this tension all night?”

He paused. “You feel it too, then.”

I snickered. “How can someone not feel it?”

I peered up at him and found him gazing down at me with a look in his eye I couldn't place. It wasn’t a chastising look. But he also wasn’t looking at me with lust in his eyes. There was something there I’d never seen in his face before, and I had a hard time deciphering it.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn't have asked,” I said.

“Why do you say that?” he asked.

My eyes fell back to the crowd. “I don’t know.”

“Well, you couldn't be farther from the truth.”

“I’m not following.”

“I just meant you don’t ever have to be sorry for asking questions like that. There’s no way you could know about the dynamics of people who have been around for a while.”

I sipped my drink. “So, why is he here?”

“To put it bluntly? No one’s wanting to start a family war.”

I almost choked. “Come again?”

He chuckled. “While James Daly isn’t exactly revered in our circle, his family is about to marry into ours.
